Triang No.61
Introduction to Triang No.61

‘A larger house with two large rooms and built-in garage. Metal-framed windows with curtains, tiled sun-porch and steps. Red tiled roof.’
19 inches [48 cm] wide 11 inches [28 cms] deep 17 inches [43 cms] high
This is my latest addition to my collection a Triang No.61. Following strict Covid guidelines at the local Auction House, I viewed this lovely little house. I have one like this already, but dolls houses are like puppies, each one deserves a good home. Also included in the sale were two boxes of Mattel furniture, and a rather large vase complete with plastic flowers. I decided to bid online, I have not done this before, so I did worry that I would not be able to keep up. I did not need to worry, the process of bidding was easier than I thought, almost as if I was in the room. This house did get a few bids, so got a good price at the auction ….. I think it was the vase of flowers that did it.

There was a little blue plastic bag inside the house with a few bits and pieces in, look what I found Triang steps, I knew this house was hiding a secret.

You can just about see little bits of rubber where the trees should have been.

The outside has been overpainted with gloss paint, so will take some removing. It does however have all the windows, complete with curtains.

On the front panel where the flowers are painted on, some rubbery moss type plant has been stuck on, with very hard sticky glue.

The wallpaper is very pretty, so I will be keeping this, even through there are a few paper sticker marks. It adds to its charm, and can always be disguised with well placed furniture or pictures. The floor paper is also complete and does not need replacing.

The roof is a bit of a mess, and needs a bit of attention. The tape has cracked along the roof joins, it has also been very heavily overpainted in red.

And now to work…….
Fretwork and Garage Doors

The Fretwork from around the windows, and roof gable on the Triang No.61 has been removed. The roof gable fretwork is made out of cardboard, it has become very fragile around the nail holes.

Rather than replace the fretwork, I have added some new card on the reverse to give it some support.

All the fretwork for the house is now complete, with a nice coat of brown paint. The fretwork around the windows did not need any extra backing support.

The garage doors have been painted red, so they need to have the paint removed.

After removing the paint, I have redone the lines in the door with a round ended tool.

When the hinges were polished, I put masking tape around to protect the wood.

The paint on the reverse side of the doors has gone deep into the wood, so they will have to stay as they are.
Stripping
This is the front panel of the house, it has had a rubber plant stuck to it over the flower decal with very hard glue.

I was going to try and remove the top layer of paint, to try and keep it original as possible.

I did manage to remove the top layer of paint, using a craft blade, it revealed the flower decal underneath.

You can see in the picture above that the hard glue has taken off the layer of paint, so it looks as if I will have to paint it after all. It is so disappointing, as the paint seemed to be coming off nicely.
Roof
The paint on the roof was is in very poor condition, and the tape around the joins of the roof panels has come away, the chimney is also missing.

All the red paint from the roof has been removed, along with the tape. It was a very long and fiddly job, as the roof is made from cardboard, so I had to be careful not to get it too wet, or damage the surface.

The house and base have been sanded ready for painting, so I can get on with painting the roof. I use brown paper parcel tape to cover the joins on the roof. The gummed parcel tape needs to be made moist so it will adhere to the surface. I have done this with water before, but over time it begins to lift. So I have moistened the tape this time with PVA glue and water, hopefully this will provide a longer sticking tape.

I have found it is best to start painting with the roof.
Windows

This house has all its windows, complete with curtains. The frames and inserts need to be tidied up a bit as they are a little rusty.

The windows have now been taken apart, the curtains and Perspex removed.

As the windows were a bit rusty, so I removed the loose rust and made a smooth surface and then treated them with a rust treatment, which provides a protective surface to paint on.

The window frames have now been painted, in Buckingham Green Gloss paint. I have not used this colour paint for the frames before, but I am quite pleased with the result.

I normally use a spray paint for the window inserts, but this time I thought I would use white gloss paint. It took a number of coats of paint to get a good result, but they turned out ok.

The windows have been put back together, complete with the curtains. Very happy with the curtains, especially as the material was very fragile.
Complete
Looking very smart now, freshly painted, with new windows and stripped wooden garage doors.

Inside is a nice little collection of Jennys Home furniture. In the Living Room is the Flocked red and green 3 piece suite, in the Bedroom are two flocked red single beds. The house has not been decorated inside, so all the papers are original.
