Triang Spot On Jenny’s Home

Triang Spot On Catalogue 1961
Triang Catalogue 1961

Here for the first time, to delight the eye of every doll, is a wonderfully exciting range of Doll’s House Furniture.  Every delightful item is modelled on a full sized piece of modern furniture and is absolutely true to scale, being 1/16th of the full sized original.  Beautifully moulded in strong, long life plastic in a range of jewel like colours, with diecast metal bases and legs for added strength and stability.  There is a complete range of boxed furniture sets, packed in delightful room boxes, and each of the single items is individually cartoned.  Here is everything you need to furnish your house from top to bottom, as well as the range of domestic appliances and furnishing accessories

The Triang Spot-On Range of Furniture in the list below was produced from 1960 until approximately 1964. In addition to the Spot On range there was also the Dollie Home range from 1962, comprising mainly of room sets and larger furniture pieces such as the filing cabinet. They were not cheap pocket-money toys and probably added to the reason for their short production period. In 1965 it was later rebranded as the Jenny’s Home Range, in conjunction with the ‘Homes and Gardens’ magazine. Jenny’s Home range was produced until 1970. The furniture was made in the Belfast factory which had been producing die-cast toy vehicles since 1959.

The furniture in 1/16 scale, was made of a rigid plastic and [zinc mazak] metal, and have survived well for their age. Reflecting the style of the 1950’s They would not pass Safety Standards today, as the legs on chairs and cabinets would be quite dangerous for a small child.

The best-laid plans of mice and dolls are to be found in Tri-ang’s brilliant new range of Dolls House Furniture.  No creature of three inches (” – and a very good height!” said the caterpillar) could resist this charming design for domestic harmony.  A new dimension of modern living has been opened up for the contemporary Lilliputian.  Almost every possible room-arrangement may be assembled from the Tri-ang range.  It is furniture for the whole Dolls’ House; at one sixteenth human size.  The enterprising home-maker will be delighted with the simple and uncluttered line of these beautifully proportioned pieces, in which functional design and elegance combine to form the perfect setting for the modern doll.

The links below are to the Triang Furniture that I have in my collection. Not a very big collection at the moment, but some interesting pieces. The sub links show how a piece of furniture changed under the rebranding to the Jenny’s Home range.  Some of the Jenny’s Home range has been listed using either the prefix J or JH.

ROOM BOXES

Triang sold many of their individual furniture item in room sets, packaged in boxes which opened up to show a decorated room, with furniture in place.  This also continued into the Jenny’s Home Range.

WOODEN FURNITURE SETS

Triang produced a range of wooden bedroom and dining room furniture, it was available for 1 year only, in 1963.  The scale is nearer to 1/12 than 1/16, they are quite large pieces of furniture, in a very modern style.

FITTED TRIANG FURNITURE

Some of the Triang Dolls houses came with various wooden pieces of furniture fitted within the houses.  The bathroom with a wooden bath and sink. The kitchen could have a sink, dresser, cooker or range depending on age and style of house.  Of course most of the rooms had fireplaces.  These pieces of furniture are quite roughly made, with little or no detail.

I received a lovely email from Jill Rooney, I thought I would post it here.  I am sure it will bring back many childhood memories

My Dad made me the Hobbies dolls Chalet bungalow in 1968 when I was 6. I remember watching him making it in the shed where he and I played with hammers and nails, paint and glue, including staining the floors and Mum making the curtains, including some out of my sister’s summer school uniform remnants. Dad had terrible taste in wallpaper and the dolls house had remnants from all over the house. Purple, orange and sea blue as I recall. It was so modern compared with my eldest sisters Hobbies dolls house. It had a loft conversion and stairs going through the house front to back, and the so desirable electric lighting.

The furniture was a mixed bag, probably for cost reasons. I had dol toi in the main, including the exclusive to Hobbies yellow kitchen furniture. The table design is ultra modern 60s. I ws interested to see in your artcle that the later Jennys home sofa copied the dol toi set in that it has the Fuzzy coating.

I had some Triang furniture too. Mostly the two portable lights with their own wiring, , the shed pack (obviously Dad was a shed man!) and glory of glories in my eyes, the Hoover washing machine. This was exactly like my Mum’s, with the twin tub. She would use huge tongs to lift the steaming washing from washer to spinner. Not glamorous after all because she always got a red face!  The work bench was my other favourite, with all the tiny tools and the working vice, just like Dad’s, on which I learned to cut wood (much too young!)  My third fave was the radiogram with the arm footprint the record, again just like the big one in the lounge. I had a problem with the arm on all record players, as I am left handed. As you have to use your right arm because the left blocks the view of the record, my arm was rather imprecise and the record would begin with a crash. Last but not least the bookcase with multi coloured books.

All my furniture was that gorgeous blue green colour, but made with metal legs so that makes it early Jennys home.

Thanks for letting me learn that!

Sadly when my Dad died in 2006 I made a foolish decision to leave it behind when we sold the house, trying to be ‘sensible’ as our house is small. I have regretted this bitterly, as the dollshouse was so much a part of my life.

I have now spent several years trying to replace it all, which  I can never do of course as the house I managed to get on ebay was not made by Dad. It certainly had more tasteful wallpaper, which I have now stripped. That may have been another mistake as the dolls house design makes it incredibly fiddly to redecorate. There are walls you can’t see, only feel!

It has been a lovely new hobby getting and refurbishing the house and each little bit of furniture. I am still missing the work bench and the limited edition yellow rutland kitchen table and stools, but I’ve got those in red. And I can think of Dad and his shed as I work.
